Permissions

As crazy as this sounds, not all hosting companies are a good choice for your Web site needs.

In this day and age, there are so many tools that enable you to easily set up your site with calendars, blogs and other tools to make your site easier to manage. There are tools that help automatically publish your ideas.

The things it takes to be a good Web hosting company have changed radically over the last few years. It used to be fine to be able to have a domain e-mail, like yourname@yourdomain.com. Now the ability to easily host and manage multiple domains and databases are the keys to a successful Web presence.

I recently helped a client set up a blog on their site and build out some neat features. I created a content management system, custom templates and uploaded the files only to find out I could not manage permissions! Chances are if you are reading this, you have only a vague idea about file permissions. File permissions tell the server who can have access to the file or folder and what they can do with it. The Web hosting company would allow people to upload files, but if you wanted the permissions on even one file changed, a user had to put a request in with the hosting company. This is wrong and should never be the hosting company policy.

It is very hard to even know the questions to ask when looking for a hosting provider and questions like permissions can easily be overlooked and prevent you from building the Web site you need to promote yourself.
